How do I calibrate Middlegray to my camera?

Every iPhone camera differs slightly, so compare Middlegray once with a meter you trust, such as your camera's own meter.

1. Set Middlegray to Aperture priority, with the same ISO and aperture as your camera.
2. Meter the same evenly lit midtone with both, such as a gray card. In Middlegray, tap the preview to meter a small spot.
3. Tap the settings button, the sliders at the bottom right of the meter screen, and change Calibration until Middlegray shows the same shutter speed as your camera.

+1 gives one stop more exposure. If Middlegray shows a faster shutter speed than your camera, raise Calibration. If it shows a slower one, lower it. Calibration covers ±3 EV in ⅓ stop steps and is saved for your iPhone model, so calibrate again if you change to a different model.

What does "Too dark" mean?

The light is too low for the iPhone camera to measure. Middlegray shows Too dark, with "Below the camera's metering range" underneath, when the camera is already at its highest sensitivity and the scene is still too dark for a reading worth trusting.

• Check that nothing, such as a finger, is covering the cameras on the back of your iPhone.
• Move to brighter light, or add light to the scene.

A reading you are already holding stays on screen. You can't start a new hold while Too dark is showing.

How do I open Middlegray with the Action button?

On an iPhone with an Action button, you can set the button to open Middlegray straight into live metering.

1. Open the Settings app and tap Action Button.
2. Swipe to Shortcut, then tap Choose a Shortcut.
3. Find Middlegray and choose Meter Light.

Press and hold the Action button to use it. Middlegray opens, starts metering and releases any reading you were holding. The first time you open Middlegray, it shows a short introduction and asks for camera access before it starts metering.

Where do the film corrections come from?

Middlegray Pro corrects long exposures for reciprocity failure using each film maker's own published data sheet: Harman's for Ilford and Kentmere films, and Kodak's and Fujifilm's for theirs. Where a maker publishes nothing for an exposure time, Middlegray says so rather than guessing, and past a maker's last published figure it marks the time as an estimate.

Pro is locked on my iPhone. How do I get it back?

Open Settings in Middlegray and tap Restore purchase. Pro comes back on any iPhone signed in with the Apple Account that bought it. If you had Middlegray before it became free, Pro is included for that Apple Account, and comes back the same way.

How do I get a refund?

Middlegray is free, and Middlegray Pro is bought from the App Store, so Apple handles payments and refunds, and Kiducate can't issue or reverse one. To request a refund, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", and follow the steps.

Does Middlegray save or upload my photos?

No. Middlegray doesn't take photos. It uses the camera only to measure light, and never saves or sends camera images. The Privacy Policy explains the crash and hang reports it does send.
